What is premarital counselling?
Premarital counselling is a type of relationship counselling designed to help couples prepare for marriage and develop a strong foundation in their relationship. The goal of premarital counselling is to help couples learn pivotal skills that will enhance your marriage, such as communication, compromise, healthy patterns of behaviour, and problem-solving strategies.
Premarital counselling also explores what you and your partner envision married life to be like. Discussing the dreams, goals and visions of a partnership is so important to a marriage. These conversations will help you determine if your two expectations align and are compatible.
What will we discuss in premarital counselling?
At Kylie Lepri Counselling, our experienced and qualified therapists work with couples to help them understand the complexities of marriage. We explore the unique set of challenges that you may both face in your married life. Together, in the safe environment of the therapy room, you will explore aspects of your relationship, such as
- Communication skills
- Conflict resolution skills
- Decision making skills
- Life goals (children, career, location)
- Expectations of what married life will look like
Our counselling sessions are interactive and engaging, helping couples gain new perspectives on their relationship. We will also provide useful advice and resources, so you can continue working on your marriage even after the sessions have ended.
How can premarital counselling benefit my relationship?
The benefits of couples therapy before marriage include: Improved communication, healthy conflict resolution skills, clarity about each other’s needs and expectations, and essentially understanding each other on an even deeper level.
One of the primary benefits of pre-marriage counselling is that it provides couples with the opportunity to improve their communication skills. Your communication skills will be enhanced through the verbal exploration of your relationship, as well as the skills and tools shared by your premarital counsellor. Learning how to communicate effectively and have crucial conversations is essential to the success of any marriage.
Premarital counselling can also help couples develop healthy strategies for resolving conflict and tension, establish realistic expectations of married life, strengthen your relationship in a safe environment, and have tough conversations about what married life may look like. These expectations of marriage may range from
- If you will have children
- Where you will live
- How you will handle career progression
- How you will manage finances
