 What are blended and step-families?

The terms “blended family” and “stepfamily” are often used interchangeably. Blended families and stepfamilies share similar characteristics, but there are differences between these two types of family structures. Blended families and stepfamilies differ in the way the family is composed of its members.

A blended family is composed of two partners, each with their own children from previous relationships, who also share one or more children together. A stepfamily is composed of two partners who do not share a biological child, but at least one person with children from a previous relationship.

Blended and stepfamilies are formed when two individuals enter into a committed relationship and either join a family or merge their children to form a family unit. The couple will assume a parental role to children of the family, while the children become step-siblings. A blended family may also include grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins from a previous family structure.

Why do blended and step-families seek family counselling?

Blended and step families often seek family counselling to address the unique challenges that arise when individuals from different households and backgrounds combine. These families may struggle with issues such as:

  • Adjusting to new roles and relationships
  • Managing conflicts between family members
  • Navigating differences in parenting styles
  • Coping with financial strain
  • Building bonds between family members

Family counselling can provide a safe and supportive environment for family members to explore these issues and develop strategies for improving communication, building trust, and strengthening their relationships.

What is blended and step-family counselling

Blended and step family counselling is a type of therapy designed to help families understand and cope with the complex challenges they may face within their family unit. The goal of blended family therapy is for all willing members to learn about communication, adjust to roles and expectations, conflict styles and family connection, and improve upon your skills in these areas. Counselling can help children and parents develop a greater understanding of each other’s perspectives and work together to build a strong and cohesive family unit.

How can counselling support my blended family?

Blended and Step Family Counselling FAQs

The main difference between a blended family and stepfamily is the contrasting processes of creating a new family unit, or joining an existing family structure. Both types of families may face challenges that are similar, including managing new dynamics and coping with change.

Kylie Lepri Counselling and Psychotherapy offers counselling services to all families structures and dynamics. We provide a range of services that cover all types of support and advice that your family may need during this period of transition, from individual counselling to family therapy sessions, or couples counselling.

Blended and stepfamily counselling may involve individual sessions, group sessions, or a combination of both. Our family counsellors will work with the family to identify their needs and develop a customised therapeutic plan that addresses the primary concerns. This may mean individual sessions with parents, and then children, so all members can feel heard. This will be discussed at the time of booking.

Having all members of the family present for therapy is ideal. However, when that is not possible or helpful, we apply a personalised approach, as there are various ways to support a family with therapy. We can discuss this with you at the time of booking.

The initial consultation is approx 90 minutes, and the fee is $365.00.

  • This allows additional time for the therapist to better understand the history and needs of your family unit, in order to provide professional recommendations and create a plan accordingly.

Each session thereafter is usually 60 minutes, and the fee is $245.00 unless otherwise arranged.

We provide a variety of services, so if you are unsure of what may suit your family’s situation best, please call us on 0404 032636 to discuss further. You can also book a Free 15min phone enquiry call here to find out more about how we work.

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover family counselling. However, there are many private health funds who now recognise the need for family therapy and include some cover in their policies. If you are unsure, it is best to contact your private health fund provider to see if you are eligible.

People seek Blended and Family counselling for a wide variety of reasons:

  • Improve communication skills
  • Build stronger relationships
  • Establish healthy boundaries
  • Develop conflict resolution skills
  • Navigate complex relationships
  • Establish and understand expectations

As Confucius so aptly stated:

“TO PUT THE WORLD RIGHT IN ORDER, WE MUST FIRST PUT THE NATION IN ORDER; TO PUT THE NATION IN ORDER, WE MUST FIRST PUT THE FAMILY IN ORDER; TO PUT THE FAMILY IN ORDER, WE MUST FIRST CULTIVATE OUR PERSONAL LIFE; WE MUST FIRST SET OUR HEARTS RIGHT.”
